Expect to be locked in a brace that is either a non adjustable or adjustable brace at zero degrees. Your Orthopedic Surgeon (OS) may allow you to remove your brace while you are lying awake in your bed. DO NOT count on them allowing this. It is most likely you will be in this brace for at least 6 weeks or more. This is the normal procedure.
Your immobilization is the primary cause of your loss of QUAD muscle and strength. To reduce this loss, your OS may ask you perform a "Quad Setting" regimen shortly after and as soon as 1-2 weeks post op. The quad setting will allow your quadriceps muscle to contract to maintain some of its volume. It is inevitable to lose some of this muscle volume and strength during your tendon recovery. Following the UW Guide closely will assist in reducing this muscle loss. Please check with your OS first before following ANY other guides.
Your immobilization is the primary cause of your loss of QUAD muscle flexibility. The four muscles listed below can cause problems if they become tighter and less flexible. This reference Link goes into more detail of how to achieve a greater level of flexibility when you are ready for Physical Therapy
Your immobilization is the primary cause of your loss of ROM. The close secondary cause is that your tendon has most likely been shortened by your OS. This is because the tendon was not completely torn from the patella symmetrically. Your OS will have to cut the tendon to allow a symmetrical replacement of your tendon to your patella via their surgical method.
A common side affect of any structural alterations in your body. The swelling is prominent from the moment you rupture or tear your tendon. This swelling/inflammation can last as long as 6 weeks post op or even longer after your Physical Therapy (PT).
A common side affect of sleeping with a brace is to set yourself in a position with minimal movement while you sleep. This is sometimes VERY difficult if you are the type who moves a bit during the night or you sleep on your side. Either way, this is going to be a difficult task. There are many things to try here. Most importantly, you have to listen to your OS for the Post-Op instructions. It is typical that you would be required to elevate your leg during your lying or sleeping states. At the least, you will want to prop yourself with pillows. Here is some additional information.
Expect to have some form of complication during your recovery. There are MANY changes to your daily routine from your eating, sleeping and activities that will alter your construct in some way. When things start to get out their normal, complications arise. Do your best to overcome these complications. Read them here.
